Professionals FAQ

Questions about joining the network.

Practical answers about how the Vibrant Blue professional network works -- from the first conversation through an active engagement.

Getting started

Vibrant Blue is looking for experienced professionals with deep expertise in their field -- people who have operated at or near a leadership level and are interested in applying that expertise independently. The network is intentionally small and selective.

Industry background matters less than depth of experience and professional maturity. The current network spans utility and energy infrastructure, project management, data analysis, and technology infrastructure. Adjacent fields with similar characteristics are a natural fit.

No. Several professionals currently in conversation with Vibrant Blue are exploring consulting for the first time. The network is specifically designed to be a useful structure for people making that transition, not just those who already have a practice established.

That said, Vibrant Blue is not a training program. The assumption is that you have the expertise -- the network provides a professional framework and support structure around it.

A conversation. There is no application process or formal intake form. The right first step is reaching out directly -- by email, phone, or through the contact form on the For Professionals page.

Every inquiry is reviewed personally and a response typically comes within a couple of business days. The initial conversation is informal -- focused on your background, what you are exploring, and whether the Vibrant Blue framework is a good fit for where you are.

No. There is no membership fee or upfront cost to joining the Vibrant Blue network. The commercial relationship is structured around active client engagements -- Vibrant Blue earns its margin when work is being done, not as a condition of membership.

That said, professionals should be prepared to cover their own professional costs. Insurance, software, or tools required to meet a specific client's standards are the consultant's responsibility -- these are not provided or reimbursed by Vibrant Blue. This is standard territory for independent consultants, and the onboarding process is a good time to think through what your practice will require.

Onboarding process

Onboarding is straightforward and moves at a pace that works for both parties. The typical path looks like this:

  • Initial conversation -- informal discussion about your background, experience, and what you are looking for. No commitment on either side.
  • Follow-up and fit assessment -- if there is clear mutual interest, there will be a more focused conversation about how you would fit into the network and what engagements might look like.
  • Agreement review -- the Independent Contractor Agreement (ICA) is shared for your review. You are encouraged to ask questions and take the time you need.
  • Insurance quote -- as part of onboarding, you will obtain a quote for professional liability insurance appropriate to your practice. This demonstrates the ability to secure coverage when needed. Full insurance is required before your first client engagement begins, not before the ICA is signed.
  • ICA execution -- once both parties are satisfied, the agreement is signed and the relationship is formalized.
  • Supporting documents -- alongside the ICA, you will review and acknowledge a small set of supporting documents: a Data Security Policy acknowledgment, a Contractor Handbook, and a Code of Conduct. These are deliberately lightweight compared to full employment equivalents -- they exist to set clear expectations, not to add bureaucratic overhead.
  • Profile and presence -- your profile is prepared for the Vibrant Blue website. Profiles remain anonymous until you are ready to go fully public.

The full process typically takes a few weeks, depending on how quickly you move through the agreement and insurance steps.

The essentials are:

  • A current resume or professional biography
  • A description of the services you intend to offer as a consultant
  • A professional headshot for your profile (can be provided later)
  • A quote for professional liability insurance, obtained during onboarding
  • Signed acknowledgment of the Data Security Policy, Contractor Handbook, and Code of Conduct -- provided by Vibrant Blue for your review

Professional references may also be requested as part of the vetting process. This is not a formal audit -- it is a conversation about your background and how clients have experienced working with you.

Yes. There is no requirement to be available for work at any given time. Life changes, priorities shift, and the network understands that. The expectation is simply that you keep Vibrant Blue informed about your current availability so the network can be represented accurately to clients.

Agreements

The ICA is the foundational agreement between you and Vibrant Blue. It defines the nature of the relationship -- you are an independent contractor, not an employee -- and covers the key terms both parties need to operate confidently.

The ICA addresses:

  • Scope of the relationship and what it does and does not cover
  • Confidentiality obligations for both parties
  • Expectations around professionalism and conduct
  • Insurance requirements
  • How the commercial relationship works at a high level
  • Terms for ending the relationship if either party chooses to

You will have the opportunity to review the ICA fully before signing. Questions and proposed changes are welcome -- this is a relationship, not a take-it-or-leave-it form.

No. Vibrant Blue does not require exclusivity. You are free to pursue consulting work independently or through other arrangements. The ICA governs the work you do through Vibrant Blue, not everything you do professionally.

That said, the structure and support the network provides -- contracting, billing, a professional profile, peer relationships -- is most useful to professionals who want that infrastructure. The network is designed for people who want the independence of consulting with some of the scaffolding in place.

That said, the structure and support the network provides -- contracting, billing, a professional profile, peer relationships -- is most useful to professionals who want that infrastructure. Consultants who are already fully self-sufficient in those areas may find less value in the arrangement. The network is designed for people who want the independence of consulting with some of the scaffolding in place.

Either party can end the relationship with reasonable notice. The ICA specifies the exact terms, but the spirit is straightforward -- if the arrangement no longer serves you or the network, there is a clean path out. The priority in any transition is ensuring that active client engagements are handled professionally and that neither party nor any clients are left in a difficult position.

Each client engagement is governed by a Statement of Work (SOW) that defines the specific scope, timeline, deliverables, and terms for that project. The SOW operates alongside the ICA -- the ICA defines the standing relationship, the SOW defines the specific work.

Vibrant Blue handles the client-facing contract and billing. The SOW between Vibrant Blue and the consultant defines what you will do and on what terms. Both documents are reviewed and agreed before any engagement begins.

How engagements work

Consultants in the Vibrant Blue network are primarily responsible for developing their own opportunities. The network is a professional framework and facilitator -- it is not a staffing agency or placement service.

When you identify an opportunity you want to pursue, bring it to Vibrant Blue. The team will work with you to structure it properly, support the client relationship, handle contracting and billing, and help ensure the engagement runs smoothly. As the network grows and client relationships deepen, there will be more opportunities to facilitate introductions -- but the expectation is that consultants are active in developing their own work.

Vibrant Blue will engage with you to understand the opportunity -- the client, the scope, the timeline, and what the engagement looks like. From there, Vibrant Blue takes the lead on the client-facing side: structuring the contract, setting up billing, and serving as the formal engagement entity.

You remain the subject matter expert doing the work. Vibrant Blue provides the professional infrastructure around it.

Bring it to Vibrant Blue. The goal is to facilitate as many professional relationships as possible, and every effort will be made to find an arrangement that works. Not every situation has a straightforward answer, but the default is to look for a path forward rather than a reason to pass.

Yes. You are an independent contractor, not an employee of Vibrant Blue or the client. You control how you do your work. What the client contracts for are your expertise and deliverables -- not your time in the way an employer would.

Vibrant Blue handles the client relationship at the contract and billing level, but the day-to-day work is yours to manage professionally.

Billing & rates

Vibrant Blue invoices the client directly and manages collections. You are not responsible for chasing client invoices or managing that relationship -- that is handled on the Vibrant Blue side.

Your billing obligations are straightforward: submit your hours and expenses on time, per the schedule in your engagement SOW. Billing to clients is typically structured on a monthly basis or upon project completion, depending on the engagement. Timely submission on your end keeps everything running smoothly.

Rates are determined through negotiation for each engagement and defined in the Statement of Work. There is no published rate card or standard baseline. The rate for any given engagement reflects the nature of the work, the client, and what both parties agree is appropriate.

Consultants typically work under an hourly rate, though fixed-fee or deliverable-based arrangements are also possible. Your rate is agreed in writing before work begins -- there are no surprises after the fact.

Yes. Vibrant Blue bills the client at a rate that covers your compensation and the services the network provides -- contracting, billing, client relationship management, and the professional infrastructure around the engagement. The specific terms are defined in your ICA and in the SOW for each engagement.

Invoices are typically paid within 30 days of receipt by Vibrant Blue, provided the invoice is complete and submitted on time per your engagement SOW. Specific payment arrangements can vary by engagement and are addressed in the applicable SOW, so there may be some variation from the standard terms.

Payment timing is a known consideration for independent consultants and worth factoring into your financial planning. Submitting complete, accurate invoices promptly is the most direct way to keep the cycle moving smoothly.

Insurance

Professional liability insurance -- sometimes called errors and omissions (E&O) insurance -- is required for all professionals in the Vibrant Blue network before they can engage with clients. The specific coverage requirements are appropriate to your practice area and are addressed during the onboarding process.

This protects clients, protects you, and protects the network. It is a non-negotiable requirement, but it is also standard practice for any professional operating as an independent consultant.

Not a problem. Full insurance coverage is required before your first client engagement begins -- not before the ICA is signed. What is required during onboarding is a quote for appropriate coverage, which demonstrates that you can secure a policy when the time comes.

The onboarding process gives you time to understand what coverage is right for your practice. Professional liability insurance for independent consultants is broadly available and, for most practice areas, reasonably priced.

Yes. Vibrant Blue maintains appropriate business insurance. The requirement for individual professional liability coverage is in addition to, not instead of, Vibrant Blue's own coverage.

Coaching support

Second Star Advisory (SSA) is a separate professional coaching practice. It is an independent entity that provides coaching services to Vibrant Blue network members as a service provider -- the two companies operate independently and interact through a formal service agreement.

Coaching support through SSA is available as a benefit to Vibrant Blue network members, particularly useful for professionals navigating the transition into independent consulting or looking to develop their consulting practice.

No. Coaching support is available, not required. It is a resource for professionals who find it useful -- particularly those earlier in their consulting journey or working through specific professional challenges. The decision to engage coaching is entirely yours.

SSA is a separate business and will have its own service terms. Details about coaching availability and any associated costs will be available once SSA is fully operational. Current availability and any associated terms will be addressed during onboarding conversations.

The network

Small and intentionally so. Vibrant Blue has been operating since 2018, with the network growing deliberately from that foundation. Several experienced professionals are currently in conversation about joining, and the network is growing deliberately rather than quickly. The goal is a high-quality collective, not a large directory.

The intent is yes, and that opportunity grows as the network grows. Right now, with the network in early stages, the primary relationship is with Vibrant Blue leadership. As the collective develops, the expectation is that network members will know each other and have opportunities to collaborate, cross-refer, and support each other's practices.

No. The network started in utilities and energy infrastructure, which is where the network got its start, but the focus is on experienced professionals with deep expertise -- not on a specific industry. Project management, technology, data, operations, procurement, and other domains are all represented or in conversation. If your background involves senior-level expertise that clients would value, that is the relevant qualification.

Reaching out directly is the easiest starting point: ajohnson@vibrantbluesolutions.com. You can also call at 614-783-6678, or use the contact form on the For Professionals page.

No question is too small. If you are genuinely curious about the network, a conversation is the right next step.
